The New American Pond System

Charleston Aquatic Nurseries along with Maryland Aquatic Nurseries have worked together using over twenty years experience to develop a sustainable, ecological system using native wetland plants to provide green solutions for water pollution.

Natural Filters

A huge natural filtration system filled with a wide variety of wetland plant species. This innovative design removes excess nutrients while improving water quality and producing lush, beautiful wetlands.

The plants in the Floating Wetlands soak up nutrients from the water and convert them into foliage. Many of the nutrients once converted to foliage and root tissue can no longer pollute our bays, rivers, and oceans.

The root system is home for beneficial bacteria and microbes that are ideal for the nitrogen cycle. Our Floating Wetlands will reduce many types of algae associated with these ponds. Along with the benefit of their beauty these Floating Wetlands will save long-term dollars that are typically spent on chemicals, dredging and maintenance.

Beautification

The plant selection that can be utilized is very diverse. Whether you are looking for native plants or a bold exotic look we can customize a planting for you. The Floating Wetlands will draw the eye with their beauty and movement. From a design standpoint these floating gardens will help draw these ponds into the existing landscape. Along with a shoreline planting you can improve the appearance of most ponds and lakes.

Wildlife

Our experience has indicated that the Floating Wetlands will attract wildlife almost immediately. They will attract waterfowl, turtles, and otters, and provide excellent cover for fish populations. Hollis Mays, our very first Floating Wetland customer said, “I have seen great blue herons, mandarin and wood ducks. We are attracting several plover-type birds that I have seen only on the rafts. In addition to what I hope is a beneficial effect on the lake, the Floating Wetlands have certainly increased the wildlife biodiversity that visit.” Through the proper selection of plants you can attract certain species to the floating gardens.

The Floating Wetlands have also proven to be a haven for schools of fish. There will be cover for fish throughout the year to protect them from predation. The root formation will also offer good structure for spawning. Obviously, this will have a positive outlook on the various fish populations.
